At The Outset
by Jay MacLeod
Ron is upset
I cheated with his wife
It's a small space-station
After all
He caught us in the engine room
Miranda was supposed to be
Shopping in the markets of
Haumea IV
I was supposed to be maintaining
The engines
Which in a way I suppose I was
Ron works in the greenhouses
At the opposite end of the station
This morning I stepped outside
To recalibrate one of the aft thrusters
A simple enough adjustment
The itch in this suit is nearly
Unbearable
A body goes floating past
Silky brown hair and smooth skin
Sucked into the star-lit void
Turning a corner
Miranda is supposed to be shopping
She might not come back from
Humea market
This happens all the time
The itch has started to burn
There is enough oxygen
For perhaps an hour
No one is answering the radio
And the airlock won't open
No matter how much
I pound the door
