No More Than a Battered Tennis Ball
By Liz Haigh

Many knew she was ill and they tried to help, but their actions were as effective as a fist punch inside a bucket full of water. Some lived in blissful ignorance their whole lives, while others knew everything but chose not to give a damn, letting their children or their children's children sort it out.
The day came when key scientists in Geneva discovered she'd actually died some time ago. Most ignored their revelations. People laughed and called them, 'the professors of doom.' But the truth was they were living on her corpse like flies on a carcass.
When her body became so frail it could no longer sit on its axis, when she was no more than a giant battered tennis ball, rolling into the infinite blackness, only then were the cynics silenced.
