Scales of Ice, Rails of Fire

From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.

 — Fire and Ice, Robert Frost

Pine trees spear the lilac sky draping quiet

snows. Water cascades down the mountain,

sun glistening froth as liquid diamonds —

The same glimmer in your eyes. This secret

place where we first kissed, fire melting ice,

hasn't changed like the rest of the world.

There, see that rock jutting from the hard ice?

It's still blazoned with our names.

Tomorrow we must ride into battle.

              Tonight, we make love.

He reaches for her,

coiling his long tail behind her, draws her closer.

His hot breath spews fire, her emerald eyes spark

greener than her innermost lace — now splay open

for him. Clasping, they fold into each other's

leather wings. The sound of water and wings beating

against ice, and the fire of dragons' cries:

the only music in the air.
